Self-Publishing

What is Self-Publishing?

Self-publishing is getting your idea or material into a professional final book or ebook.  Its having a great product representing both the author and the publisher ready for the market place.  While keeping the cost down to the minimum.

It also means you doing most of the work.  You need to become the author, editor, publisher and publicist for you and your book.  So you need to make good business decisions.  You are putting a book into the market and need to know how to get it through all the right channels.

One other thing you need to remember is that time and money is different for each person.  How much time and how much money do you have determines your options.  If waiting for a publisher to answer you back is in your time frame than go for it.  You must evaluate what kind of time and money you can set aside for your book.

Self-publishing is a choice to get behind your idea or material 100%.  Giving you a paperback or hardbook cover to present to retailers and even publishers around the world.

What types of Publishing is out there?

There are so many types of publishing services out there today.  I will try and give you a highlight of a few popular ones?

  • Vanity press--Churns out anything without regard to writing, style, typesetting, fonts and so on.  You upload a manuscript and press print.  Order as many copies as you want.  No marketing. No retailers. Maybe some direct sales via online website. Pay a fee based on quantity of books you want.

  • Glorified Publishing subsidary --Basically this is a glorified self-publisher.  They offer some professional services as far as editing, manuscript review and final proof. Plus may offer or promise online marketing. They charge a hefty fee for their services anywhere from $1500 to $4500 as a participation fee. They will even send you an acceptance letter.  Offers royalties.

  • Self-Publishing--A quick one time definition for self-publishing is this "Anytime money comes out of your pocket to produce your book its self-publising." When you pay someone to print your book either online, via mail or kinko's your self-publishing. It's getting your book out of the computer and putting it in book form or ebook form and getting paid for sales. Your basically getting your book into the market yourself.

  • Print Shops-- Basically a printer very similar to vanity press only difference is print shop doesn't represent itself as a full service publisher with sales or royalties.

  • Publishing House--Basically a traditional publisher that accepts or rejects a manuscript submitted.  Aborbs all cost. Pays advance sometimes. Pays royalties usually 10% to 15% for first time authors. Needs reference from published author. Handles all marketing.
Lessons in Self-Publishing?

When your self-publishing you need to know that the printer has everything correct before you confirm order. We have the best printer companies that provide the best production work and that work well with self-publishers.

If you don't know how to proof the digital copy accurately (typeset, page count,size,dimensions,etc..) before accepting the galley print or proof to be printed out.  You can lose alot of money on a bad print job. Plus have to halt production and pay extra fees to get the proof right. Not to mention incurring additional overnight fees for each galley print or proof.

Whats the Truth about Printers and Glorified Print Shops?

Remember to not get charged retail for your book minus a book discount.  I've seen several print shops online claiming to be publishers yet they make their money not by selling your book in the retail market.  But through selling copies of your own book to you at a 25% discount off retail. In fact you have to purchase several hundereds of books to get price down below $8 a copy. Thousands to get the book down to $3 a copy. That kind of pricing is ridiculous! This is your work. Why should you be penalized or charged outrageous prices for your own copies you want to give away or sell? Anyone charging those prices are not real publisher or self-publishing companies.  But the are glorified print shops.  Believe me I am a publisher with relationships with several printers where I can get the price down below the high prices you have seen on other sites.  I know it costs money to get a book out

The Real Truth about Publishers?

It is taking control of your own destiny with your book.  Maybe you have spent hours of making mailers, phone calls and researching publishing houses only to find out the truth. Most Publishing Houses want named or referred authors in order to review your manuscript. Some might take the time to read your manuscript but wait months to send you a letter to accept/deny your work.

Publishing Houses want named   (celebrity,published,known,etc..) authors for one reason. Marketablity!  It is easier to presell, market, arrange book tours and create a buzz with a named author.  A named author already has a following and audience that almost guarantee sales.  Its easier for publisher to merit an advance and a lucrative compensation plan for a named author.

Don't worry I am not saying that you can't get published but just giving you the motive of publishing houses.  You should be encouraged that its not your work or manuscript they don't want. It's the idea that they need to meet certain parameters to create a big bang on their buck.  They take all the risk when they take a project.

A WARNING TO SELF-PUBLISHERS LOOKING TO HAVE BOOKS REPRESENTED IN BOOK STORES.  A LARGE NUMBER OF BOOK STORES HAVE DENIED ACCESS TO THEIR BOOK SHELVES TO SELF-PUBLISHERS. NOT FOR THE FACT THAT THEY WERE MERELY SELF-PUBLISHED BUT BECAUSE THE BOOKS PRINTED WERE NOT PRINTED TO THE BOOK INDUSTRY STANDARD.

I personally have seen two books that were denied from bookstores because they look like a "self-publish" book.  These books were both from two of the top online book printers marketed.  Both books showed all the tale signs of self-publishing.  Be sure when you pick a publisher they are not just a printer. But that they care about getting your book sold and in retailers shelves.

RevMedia Publishing cares about how a book is suppose to look and produces beyond the industry standards.
